Value Added Packaging Initiative

This project was one of my most most ingenious. For the PrintCity I developed a high value added folder with 25 different print samples. Each made with different effects to show and explain the fantastic possibilities of Value Added Packaging.

Based on 5 different base designs for three different markets (tobacco, food and cosmetics) I designed 5 different versions to show the effects. The hardest work here was the high complex production management for which I was also responsible. Here I had to find the best solution to reduce the number of print jobs to the minimum. Due to the fact that we produced on 5 different substrates, in water based and UV and some jobs also food safe, I had to handle a multi-dimensional matrix here to find the best solution. At the end we managed it to produce the whole project with only 9 print sheets including the labels and the folder but with a much higher complexity for each job.

The effects we used were: cold foil, hot foil embossing, a high range of coating and lacquer effects, several Iriodin pigments, embossing, debossing, laminating, combinations of offset printing, flexo printing and screen printing on coated and uncoated substrates.

As the whole project was made not only to show all the possibilities but also to educate the industry how to reproduce everything, we printed also the machine configurations, processes and used materials on the backside of each print job AND I wrote also high complex tutorials for each job for designers, production managers and printers, describing everything.

We rolled the whole project out for drupa 2012 and since then we teach the industry alongside with other packaging related topics in road shows and forums such as the yearly Packaging Inspiration Forum in Germany.
